Capture Issues

I am having issues with my capture image, I am currently using landesk 9.5.

One of the problem seems to be unless I install the landesk agent it will fail and not create the WIM file. This then causes issue on deployment and when i push it out the agent doesnt seem to work and I have to reinstall the agent before Landesk will see it with an agent.

Also the old image we used seem to be able to push out to all our machines ok, Previous guy created the image.

So I started recently building a new image basically was going to replace his old one.  I have to use his jobs to create the .wim and push it out as i can create my own without getting the below error. I copied his setup but cant save with out this error, The old ones also got this error when open them but they dont need to be saved

capture.jpgcapture.jpg

My last issue sorry to throw it all out there but i created the image of a machine .WIM file, when i deploy it to the machines the old image worked on i get error

Windowss could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer, restart the installation.

HII not working in provisioning

Is anyone else having an issue with the hii program not installing network drivers on windows 7?   I have a intel network card on a lenvo T series laptop that worked and installed on the pre SP1 version.   After I upgraded to SP1 it quit installing.   I made sure that it was assigned to the model, but the HII log still comes up and says that no drivers were found.

LD 9.5 SP1 HII Driver Management: Disabling Drivers

I have a driver that is causing DISM error 2 when it tries to inject it into a Windows 8 offline image. This causes the whole provisioning task to fail.

I tried using the new "Disable Drivers" feature in LD 9.5 SP1 to disable the driver.  I disabled it for all Windows 8 x64 Device ID's, but DISM is still trying to inject that driver.

Has anyone had any luck with the "Disable Drivers" feature, and, if so, how did you get it to work?

Thanks.

Create Partition

To reduce the number of actions needed in a template additional options have been included with the create partition action handler. They include the ability to mount the newly created parittion, format the partition, and make the partition bootable. The ability to create GPT partitions has also been added.

Hardware Independent Imaging (HII)

HII can now be run in both the Post-OS configuration (WinPE) section of provisioning as well as the System configuration section (Client OS). During the Post-OS configuration HII will only apply driver files. Driver setup packages are ignored. During the System configuration HII will apply assigned driver setup packages. Driver INF files are ignored as they should already have been applied in the Post-Os configuration.

Patch System

The option to select the scan and repair settings that will be used has been added.

Template Options

Template options have been added to allow provisioning to run silently, control how long the client GUI is visible after completing and to retain the provisioning folder when the template has completed.

ProvOptions.JPG

Windows Refresh

Support for Windows 8 refresh and reset have been added. Note that recovery media from your manufacturer may be required. Options for using the local WIM or specifying a WIM are available.

Reset: Deletes all personal files and settings. By default will quick delete files meaning files could be recovered using special software. Checking the option to fully clean the drive will erase data thoroughly making  recovering deleted files far less likely.

Refresh: Does not affect user data or settings.

Create and assing local WIM: Creates and image of the device in the current statue and assigns it as the local refresh/reset wim.

Assign specified image as local WIM: Assigns a new WIM as the local WIM on the device.

LANDesk pxe boot creates an inventory entry!

I was testing some Bare Metal templates on 4 machines.  I deleted the Bare Metal intentory entries for my 4 machines and booted one of the from the NIC and pressed F8 to see the boot options.  I left it there and re-ran my query for my 4 MAC addresses.  Sure enough, there is a LANDesk entry with the MAC as the name.  Just wanted to share because I thought it was cool and never knew it did that!

Anyone know how it does that?  Does the pxe rep send the inventory entry to the core?

There is actually more data in the WinPE mini-scan than what that entry contained.  This entry only contains:

Computer > Device ID

Computer > Display Name

Computer > ID

Computer > Inventory Server

Computer > Last Updated by Inventory Server

Computer > Record Creation Date

Computer > LANDesk Management > Proxy Host Name

Computer > LANDesk Management > Proxy ID

Computer > LANDesk Management > Proxy NIC Address

Computer > Network > NIC Address

Comptuer > Network > Pxeboot

Computer > Network > TCPIP > Address (which lists 0.0.0.0)

Model Specific Drivers in a Provisioning Template

$

We provision several different models of computers through provisioning templates and HII.  It seems that some models are not getting the correct drivers or are not installing at all.  Example:  We are provisonign a Dell E6330 laptopn that uses a USB 3.0 bus driver. I've download the install files, extracted them and put them in the Driver Repository and updated it.

When the template is complete and the image is installed the USB ports do not work.  I have to manually run the setup to install the files.  Is there a way to install model specific drivers in a template or force HII to find the correct files?

Thanks,

V9.5 SP1 HII using a SWD Package

Hi All,

Just been working out the new feature of being able to assign a setup based install package to a hardware component that was introduced in v9.5 SP1 to HII. I have it working well but there is no real doco on how to get this operating so thought I would share some tips:

  1. There is a new HII action in provisioning now under system configuration (as well as the inf based one found under post-os config) that you must add to your template
  2. As this is deploying a SW Package you must have an agent installed to the new host OS before running this new HII action

With these two steps it is working well so far.

Insert Script action failing to insert unattend.xml since LD 9.5 upgrade

$

When using a provisioning template that was working successfully under 9.0 SP3, it now fails when trying the inject the unattend.xml file.  The issue appears to be with the way drive letters are assgned to the partitions prior to the CTOS action item. When I am attempting to image a desktop for some reason the partitons are labeled M: and N: where M: is the 100 MB windows system partion and N: is the OS partition. In this case the provisioning completes with an Inject Script action item to N: unattend.xml.

For a laptop the same two partitions are labeled C: and D: and the provisioning completes with an Inject Script action item to D:unattend.xml.

Both devices are using the same image and template. The imageW V2 command is as follows: /r /o /x /d:0 /rb:0 /f:\\CORESERVER\images\master7image\Win7x64Base.TBI

Why is this occuring since the LD 9.5 SP1 upgrade and how can this be made consistant?

Error codes in ldprovisioning logs

Trying to get to the bottom of an issue I am having with the deploy profile command in my osd provisioning template using 9.5. The capture profile works fine and the profile can be manually restored or used in a template as a stand alone deploy profile command, but the deploy profile fails when used within my complete template. This seems to happen only to profiles larger than 3GB.

I have checked the ldprovisioning logs and it indicates that the ldprovision.exe: Reporting action status:  5 to Core right before the deploy profile fails.

I have checked the deploy profile handler log and it indicates:  DeployProfileHandler.exe:Executed Command. Return value is 259.

My question is does anybody know what these error codes indicate.  I am hitting a brick wall when it comes to being able to confidently capture and restore a users profile.

PXE Representative Deployment Password - LDMS 9.5

$

LDMS Core recently upgraded from 8.8 to 9.5

Attached are two PXE Rep scripts.

   1. PXE Representative Deployment

This is the system default script.

This loads the environment OKuntilI add a password. Please see line REMEXEC14 and REMEXEC16.

The pxe environment will not load after these lines are added.

PXE Error = PXE-M0F

I have also tried to run PXEPasswordConfig.exe /pw=value on my PXE Rep. This also breaks it!

   2. PXE_REP_UK

This was created using a new 'Build the secure PXE representative deployment scripts'

This adds the password OK but the pxe environment will not load - issue with

Windows Error = \Boot\BCD

Questions

Are there password rules?

Why does the new script (2) fail and look different?

  • The examples below have had the password values replaced with the value 'password'.
  • PXEPasswordConfig.exe.log looks OK? - Lots of 'succedd' lines. Last line = PXEPasswordConfig  :  leave  CPXEPasswordConfigApp::InitInstance()

No GUI for apps during provisioning?

Hi,

We need to use truecrpyt during the last step of system configuration during provisioning to set the local administrator password.  However, it seems that provisioning doesn’t display the application but does launch the process (I can see it in task manager).  I have unchecked the capture command output box in the provisioning step but this did not seem to help.  Any ideas?

problem with Variables in COPY FILE action

$

I am working within the SYSTEM CONFIGURATION section of provisioning on LDMS 9.5 unpatched.  I need a FILE COPY action to run as one of the last steps in provisioning.  The file that I want to copy to the local disk is a .TBI backup of the original image which was written to a network share early in provisioning.  I am using a variable for the .TBI that is created:

%ImageShare%%imagepath%%ldDeviceID%.tbi

when I enter this same variable in the SOURCE PATH & FILE NAME part of the provisioning action, I get the following error message:

"The source path and file name is blank or invalid.  Type a valid source path and file name."

If I hard-code the initial part of the string and include the variable at the end like this:

\\hostname\path\%ldDeviceID%.tbi

it seems to work.

I was under the assumption that support for variables was universal, but I guess not.  Is there any documentation of where variables don't work?

Create Bootable WinPE CD for Using OSD Script

$

I was told by LANDesk Support that the community could possibly provide information on creating a WinPE CD for deploying an OSD script.  This would be the equivalent of selecting the WinPE Menu (PXE Boot Menu) as opposed to the WinPE Provisioning Menu when you F8 off of a PXE boot.  I did see this post:

http://community.landesk.com/support/message/32588#32588

But it is a bit convoluted and the guy mentions using BartPE and using n2menu in place of peshell.exe and so on.  These are external components and do you really need to use a 3rd party app to accomplish this?  I'm still searching the community to see if there's a better post or document out there but if someone has already accomplished this, or knows how to accomplish this, please reply to this post.  Thanks everyone!

Push 32 bit console in template

Greetings..

I've been tasked with creating a few new image templates for our Help Desk.  It's a fairly basic template, with a bunch of apps all pre-configured.  The HD boss wants her users to have the v9.5 32-bit full console installed as well as part of the template process.  Previously, we would just provision the machines, then add the console and remote viewer post-install, one machine at a time.

Is it possible to have the 32-bit console be included in the template, and what would be any required switches for a silent install?

Thanks,

Rick

DHCP Configuration options 66 and 67

Description

This is a follow-up on document http://community.landesk.com/support/docs/DOC-28279. As indicated in that document, options 66 and 67 in the DHCP Scope Options should not be used. However... what if this really really really is your only option?

DHCP Scope Options and WinPE

As described in the document referenced above, after the client receives the PXE answer it needs to go to the next step, which is to download a boot environment. This is where DHCP options 66 and 67 come in. Option 66 tells the PXE booted client what the Bootserver is and option 67 the Bootfile that needs to be loaded.

This removes all flexibility of the LANDesk PXE menu, as we can only download the WinPE boot file, without the variable (WinPE menu/Managed WinPE/Provisioning) passed on by PXE booting.

So, how do we handle this...

First let's set the DHCP Scope options.

Option 66 is pretty self-explanatory, this is the bootserver aka the server that hosts your PXE representative (basically, the host of the TFTP server). Use the IP address of the PXE representative here.

Option 67 is the relative path to the bootfile, in case of the LANDesk PXE representative this is x86pc\undi\provwin\startrom.0  The path is relative to the root of the TFTP server. You can basically reference any of the startrom.0 paths under the UNDI path.

This will boot WinPE on the device that PXE boots. You can reference any of the startrom.0 files because the startnet.cmd in the boot.wim WinPE file won't receive the code generated by PXE menu boot that tells it to go into Provisioning/WinPE menu or Managed WinPE mode. The result is a running WinPE, without any OSD menu/provisioning menu.

If we want to use Provisioning or automatically load the OSD menu, we need to edit the startnet.cmd in the boot.wim file. To do this, mount the boot.wim file in the Program Files (x86)LANDesk\Managementsuite\landesk\vboot map on the Core Server. Open the startmenu.cmd in the \windows\system32 map in the mounted wim file. Find the following lines:

set /a option = %errorlevel%

@rem option refer to boot option:
@rem -2 means in provisioning vboot (not in winpe2.0)
@rem -1 means not in winpe2.0
@rem 1 means pxemenu
@rem 2 means managed pxeboot
@rem 3 means provisioning winpe

Replace the %errorlevel% in the first line by the number matching the startup type you need, for example, provisioning = 3:

REM ------CHANGES NEEDED FOR DHCP SCOPE OPTION 67----

REM set /a option = %errorlevel%

set /a option = 3

@rem option refer to boot option:
@rem -2 means in provisioning vboot (not in winpe2.0)
@rem -1 means not in winpe2.0
@rem 1 means pxemenu
@rem 2 means managed pxeboot
@rem 3 means provisioning winpe

REM ------END OF CHANGES---

Save the startnet.cmd file and unmount the boot.wim file, committing the changes.

Re-deploy your PXE representative(s). The Boot.wim file will now load simulating Provisioning was chosen in the PXE menu.

Software deployment in a provisioning template

Prior to 9.5 sp1 I was able to deploy an msi file just by putting for example  \\servername\installs$\flash\install_flash_player_11_plugin.msi in the target path and file name field and a /qn in the command line parameters.  Now after 9.5 sp1 has been applied that is no longer working.   The task just hangs forever with no errors or anything.   Is this by design?

User profile migration

Has anyone been using Profile Migration in LDMS 9.0 sp3?

I need to do a ton of hardware refresh and I currently have something that works, migrates all user profiles. However, I'm looking for the different variables that you can use to also backup the Pictures, Movies etc..

Let me know if anyone is successfully using it.

Thanks

Provisioning: PXE won't auto boot

$

Hello,

Looking for some expertise in LanDesk imaging here. I recently followed this pdf http://community.landesk.com/support/docs/DOC-22507 even though I'm on Management Suite 9.5. Last week I followed the directions and used that template and left off with having problems mapping the image share. However, when I go back to it this week, I can't get the client to be imaged to even auto-boot the Win PE provisioning like it did last week. Does anyone have an idea why this could be or where I could begin to trace the problem? I don't see much in terms of logs between LanDesk and the PXE server.

The PXE is on the same subnet as the client and is not the DHCP server. I add the client as a Bare Metal Server as per the instructions and then schedule the template as a task, dragging and dropping the client on to it. I start the task, wait until it says active, and then pxe boot the client. I know that the core server can see client because it fills in the IP information once the client boots up.

When I manually select Win PE provisioning from the PXE menu the tool says that nothing has been scheduled for that client and to login in order to see available tasks.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,

Jon
